Field Tuning Required

The HAD4022A must be trimmed during installation to tune it for the radio system’s operating frequencies.

Motorola’s tuning procedure requires the installer to:

• Remove the antenna rod from its base

• Trim the lower portion of the rod according to the Motorola tuning chart

• Reinstall and secure the rod

• Check reflected power with appropriate RF test equipment

• Fine-tune for the lowest practical VSWR

Motorola specifies a target VSWR of less than 1.5:1. Installation by a qualified two-way radio technician is strongly recommended.

Gain Antenna vs. Quarter-Wave Antenna

The HAD4022A is best suited for relatively flat terrain where increased horizontal coverage is desired.

A quarter-wave antenna may provide a more balanced vertical signal pattern in:

Permanent Through-Hole Installation

Installation requires drilling an appropriate mounting hole through a suitable metal vehicle roof. The antenna should be mounted near the center of a large, flat conductive surface whenever practical.

Motorola advises that the supplied coaxial lead-in cable should not be shortened. Correct grounding, weather sealing and cable routing are essential for safe and reliable operation.

Important Product Distinction

The HAD4022A is a tunable non-GPS VHF antenna. It is not ready for unrestricted operation across the entire 132–174 MHz range without being trimmed for the intended frequencies.

It does not provide GPS or GNSS reception.
